Congratulations!
Iraqis walked great distances to stand in line to commit an act that could get themselves killed. Then they stepped out into the streets and ostentatiously displayed their badges of courage, the blue ink on their fingers that showed they had voted. Whatever the final tally, it's already clear that the world, and terrorists in particular, underestimated the resolution and bravery of the Iraqi people. Congratulations!

Very meaningful.
The success of the election was more important than who was elected.
No.
Vavoom: Clearly the ultimate success of a new government in Iraq won't be known for years or perhaps decades. But can't I be optimistic for one day?
Vavoom and others don't seem to understand...this wasn't "a sham", it was a beginning. For all the mistakes that have been made here and elsewhere, progress is being made. I live near the 3rd ID here in Georgia and I often speak with our soldiers who have just returned from or who are readying to go back...I believe they tell me more truth than I'll hear from Dan Rather. To a man (and woman) each have told me of a majority of Iraqi citizens who are so very grateful for our liberation of their country and every troop I've met is ready...anxious...to return and finish the job. "Sham" indeed!
From the NYT today..."Let nobody tell you that this election was anything but real. Iraq's Baathists and Wahhabis may continue to bark, but this caravan is moving on."
"Sham", indeed.
And what would Gorbachev know about democracy?
